Field Training Instructor / Evaluator Hardy M. Hay of North Station volunteered to train on another shift due to a lack of trainers at that time. The officer adjusted his personal schedules and obligations in order to accommodate the request. Officer Hay was awarded Field Officer of the Month honors at the Jan. 7 at the HPOU Geneeral Membership Meeting.
FTI Hay trained PPO Rodriguez for Phase II of the program and exposed the probationary to a multitude of excellent training opportunities.
Among the more notable scenes was a call for service involving a robbery of an individual at an Exxon service station, located at North Loop West and Yale. Officers Hay and Rodriguez responded quickly and were able to locate the suspect who was fleeing the scene. Officers gave chase and subsequently made the arrest without incident.
The suspect had committed the crime with a deadly weapon but was able to dispose of it prior to the capture. The suspect was arrested and found to have a lengthy arrest record.
The scene allowed the PPO to gain valuable training in the areas of a rapid response, a successful preliminary investigation, pursuit of a felony suspect, and the arrest and booking of a dangerous felon.
Probationary Police Officer Rodriguez received exemplary training during this phase and the skills of a veteran police officer and trainer were never more evident than during this segment of the officer's training.
