Barnes had distinguished HPD career

Then-HPD Senior Police Officer John Barnes was honored during Police Week 2008 as reactive investigator of the year.

As an investigator, Barnes didn’t have to pull his sidearm to do his duty. Here are the words of the citation read when he was honored alongside other HPD officers and civilian employees as part of HPD’s Police Week tradition.

The citation reads:

“On May 15, 2007, Officer Barnes received a Possession of Child Pornography case where evidence had been retrieved from a washeteria employee. Barnes persuaded the employee to cooperate and she provided him with a license plate number of the suspect.

“The officer located the suspect, obtained an arrest warrant, took the suspect into custody and collected photographs and a computer containing over 1,200 images.

“Officer Barnes is one of the most knowledgeable officers in the Juvenile Sex Crimes Unit when it comes to computer-facilitated crimes against children.”

Barnes joined the Santa Fe Independent School District’s police force after his HPD retirement.
