The Houston Police Department will observe National Police Week from Monday, May 14 through Friday, May 18.

The purpose of this observance is to increase the public’s awareness of the role of police officers and it is during this week that we remember and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives so that we live in safety and peace.

This year’s activities will include four important events in which employees and their families are encouraged to participate. All officers and citizens are encouraged to drive with their headlights on in remembrance of the peace officers who have given their lives while protecting our cities.

  • The Police Week Awards Ceremony Luncheon to recognize officers and civilian employees for outstanding achievements will be held at noon on Thursday, May 17 at the Downtown Aquarium. The ceremony will feature the reading of the Mayor’s Proclamation and award presentations. This event has limited seating and admittance is by invitation only.

  • Clergy leaders will hold a Day of Prayer at 10 a.m., on Friday, May 18 at the Houston Police Officers Union, 1600 State Street. This event will be facilitated by Houston area clergy members to reinforce the partnership that exists between the community and our department.

  • The Annual Police Week Memorial Service to honor those officers who have given their lives in the line of duty will be held on Friday, May 18 at the Houston Police Officers Memorial site. The procession down Memorial Drive will begin at 7 p.m. The candlelight vigil will include the placing of a wreath on the Memorial, a roll call of deceased officers, a 21 gun salute, the playing of TAPS, and a fly-over by HPD police Helicopters.
