You probably know what this outfit does but might have trouble with recalling its name.
Quite simply, it’s name “has been” the Houston Law Enforcement Officers Family Support Unit.
That’s quite a mouthful and even gets difficult on second reference: HLEOFSU.
Those days are over. The name has been shortened and is being touted with a new logo and T-shirts.
Now this great family support unit will be known as: Houston Police Family Support Unit, or HPFSU.
“Our name has changed,” the unit’s chaplain, Andrea Schmauss explained, “but our dedication and commitment to helping law enforcement families remains the same.
“We are dedicated to bringing the officers and their families and the community together to provide support for officers and their families.
“In addition, when an officer is injured in the line of duty we try to make it a high priority to help in any way we can.”
Schmauss said the old name created problems: “Nobody could remember it. It was way too long. Now, thanks to Chief Acevedo, we were able to change our name to Houston Police Family Support Unit.”
Shortened, it likely will be known as “our family support unit” in short order but long on its commitment to HPD officers and their families.
The group recently added Sheri Cortez, wife of injured HPD Officer Cortez, to its leadership team.
