The Houston Police Officers Union honored Officers J. Y. Guerra and M. Combs as Patrol Officers of the Month at the April general membership meeting.
Guerra and Combs, who serves as a mentor in the HPD Mentor Program, responded to a road rage incident in which a complainant was stabbed twice.
Guerra, who served in the Army as a medic and did a tour of duty in Afghanistan as a field medic, worked with Combs to stabilize the victim, who was bleeding profusely from his wounds and going into shock.
Guerra inserted a chest tube valve to assist the victim with his breathing. The quick actions of these officers kept the victim stabilized and alive until HFD paramedics arrived and transported the victim to Ben Taub General Hospital.
Officer Guerra carries his own personal medical/trauma kit while on patrol just in case of instances like this one.
