Meet the Midnight Riders and learn how you can use a gun (raffle) to help the kids

Doug Griffith, 1st Vice President

It’s time to rodeo again.

I know that many of you look forward to the carnival, others to the food, and a few even like the performers. But what is most important is the money raised to assist the kids who work hard day in and day out on the projects for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Every year the rodeo provides millions of dollars in scholarships to kids across Texas. I have been fortunate enough to actually sponsor some of these kids in the past and it has been an amazing experience. If you have never taken the time to work with someone in 4H or FFA, you should really try it out. These kids are impressive, hard-working and dedicated.

There is a group at the rodeo that you will find hiding in the main club many nights, or out in the arena helping out with the kids. The group is called the Midnight Riders.

The Riders started as a social group and has quickly grown to be a 501C3 that helps kids struggling with their projects.

This year the group has expanded enough to be the title sponsor of the first-ever Calf Scramble at the Waller County Fair and Rodeo. This group makes its money off the sale of raffle tickets. These tickets are not your usual raffle tickets, as there are only 400 tickets sold.

Each ticket is sold for $100 but your ticket will get you a chance to win a gun every month for 12 months. Even if you win, your ticket will be placed back into the bucket for a chance to win another gun. These are not cheap guns They are Glocks, Remingtons, DPMSs and Sigs, among others offered in the raffles. This rodeo season there will be four long guns, four pistols and two shotguns. They will be in raffles over the next 12 months starting April 1.

As officers, we know we love guns. That is why I bring this message to each of you. Anyone interested in purchasing a ticket, please see me at the Union, or out with the Calf Scramble kids at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

And Remember: it’s for these great kids!
